Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

You are recommended to look at the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) when you are in doubt about anything in the VideometerLab system.

What happens to my images if VideometerLab crashes?

If the software is closed down because of an error all images will automatically be saved as Error_xxx_yyy.HIPS files in the VideometerLab directory where:

  • xxx is the date
  • yyy is a running number

Can I use VideometerLab on a Laptop?

We recommend always using a stationary pc for the VideometerLab software. If you are using a laptop pc there can be problems with the Firewire connector and/or the com port. Even if you use a build-in Firewire and when using a USB to com port converter it may cause problems. Videometer A/S does not support the use of laptop computers without a build-in Firewire connector.

The installation failed so what do I do?

Please confirm that you have administrator rights on the VideometerLab pc.

Check the disk space as the installation and Instrument Calibration acquires minimum 1 GB of free disk space.

The camera could not be installed

The VideometerLab must be powered and turned on during installation of the camera. If you can not install the camera try the following:

  • Please make sure that the Firewire camera is mounted correctly and that the connectors are tightened
  • Turn off the VideometerLab for approx. 10 seconds
  • Turn it on and try the installation again

The VideometerLab software could not be installed

Please make sure that there is not an old version of the software installed or running at the installation pc. You may remove any VideometerLab version by selecting:

  • “Start”, “Settings”, “Control Panel” and “Add or Remove Programs”
  • Try the installation again

The software crashes when using a specific operation

If the VideometerLab can be initialised correctly and section 8.1: “The VideometerLab Does Not Work” has been followed then please report the problem to Videometer A/S, see section 12.4: “Appendix D: Manufacturer Information”.

The light does not flash but one colour is constantly on

This is normally a result of a communication error between the pc and the VideometerLab. Please follow the instructions in section 8.1: “The VideometerLab Does Not Work”.

Why is the sphere not completely dark in stand-by mode?

Some diodes may send out light when the instrument is powered but the VideometerLab application is not running. This should not be considered as a problem as it will not disturb grabbing of images.

The VideometerLab does not move up and down when acquiring images

The stored up and/or down positions are maybe set wrong. Check the positions as described in section 5.2.2: “Movement”. The positions should not be equal nor should the up position be less than the down position.

If the positions seem okay according to the above try to go to position “0” and then go to position “100”. Does the VideometerLab not move or does it move slowly or noisy then please report the problem to Videometer A/S.

The VideometerLab can not be calibrated

If it is the first time the VideometerLab is calibrated please check that you have at least 1 GB free disk space on the disc where the software is installed, which is usually the C-drive.

If the VideometerLab software reports an error or even freezes during calibration please make sure that the calibration discs are used in the correct order and that they do not need to be replaced.

Follow the description in the user menual. If the problem persists please report the problem to Videometer A/S.

Why is there a black frame around the image?

Please refer to the below question “Why is the size of the objects not equal in the raw and the corrected images?”.

Why is the size of the objects not equal in the raw image and the corrected image?

This effect is expected and should not be considered as an error. Image Correction using the Instrument Calibration is among other things a scale of the image so that each pixel corresponds to a preset size in pixel/mm. The effect is seen when comparing the raw and the corrected image, where the objects appear larger in one of the images. If the camera or the lens have been changed or adjusted this difference might be enlarged. This may also result in a black frame around the corrected images.

Diagnostic Tools

Diagnostic Tools is a test function in the VideometerLab software. The purpose of this function is to ensure that the VideometerLab works properly. It can be run periodically or in case of a problem. The test generates a number of files that should be sent to Videometer A/S for analysis, see section 12.4: “Appendix D: Manufacturer Information”.

When these files has been send to Videometer by e-mail and carefully examined you will receive information of what to do next.
